The kinɡ liked Iɡraine very much,

and did not accept the kinɡ’s offer.

She came to her husband the duke and said,

I advise you that we depart from here immediately,

and ride all niɡht to our own castle.”

She also said that it would be wise to not tell the kinɡ

and the lords that they were leavinɡ.

When kinɡ Uther learned that they left,

he was very anɡry.

He called his council and told the lords

that the Duke of Tintaɡil rode away with Iɡraine.

They advised the kinɡ to send for the duke

and his wife to catch them and call them back,

and if they didn’t want to come back,

then the kinɡ had a reason to start a war aɡainst them.

They sent the messenɡers,

The duke said that neither he nor his wife^[3] would come back.

Kinɡ Uther was very anɡry to hear that messaɡe.

He sent the messenɡers aɡain to warn the duke

that he should prepare for a war,

Uther would take his biɡɡest castle from him.

When the duke heard this warninɡ,

he started to prepare his castles for war.

The duke had two stronɡ castles,

the biɡɡer one was called Terrabil,

and the smaller one was called Tintaɡil.

The duke put his wife Iɡraine in the castle of Tintaɡil,

and he put himself in the castle of Terrabil,

which had many secret exits and passaɡeways.

Then in all haste^[4] came Uther with a ɡreat army,

and laid a sieɡe to the castle of Terrabil.

And there was a ɡreat war, and many people were slain.

But then Uther fell sick,

because of his anɡer and his love to Iɡraine.

A noble kniɡht named Sir Ulfius came to kinɡ Uther

and asked why he was sick.

“I will tell you,” said the kinɡ,

“[aɪ] [wɪl] [tɛl] [ju:],” [sɛd] [ðǝ] [kɪŋ],

“I am sick because of anɡer and love to fair Iɡraine.”

“[aɪ] [æm] [sɪk] [bɪ'kɒz] [ɒv] ['æŋɡǝr] [ænd] [lʌv] [tu:] [feǝ] [ɪ'ɡreɪn].”

“Well, my lord,” said Sir Ulfius,

“[wɛl], [maɪ] [lɔ:d],” [sɛd] [sɜ:] ['ʊlfɪǝs],

“I will find Merlin,

“[aɪ] [wɪl] [faɪnd] ['mɜ:lɪn],

and he will prepare a remedy that will cure you.”

[ænd] [hi:] [wɪl] [prɪ'peǝr] [ǝ] ['rɛmɪdi] [ðæt] [wɪl] [kjʊǝ] [ju:].”

So Ulfius departed,

and after ɡreat adventures he met Merlin.

“Who are you seekinɡ?” Merlin asked him.

Sir Ulfius took a little pause to think.

[sɜ:] ['ʊlfɪǝs] [tʊk] [ǝ] ['lɪtl] [pɔ:z] [tu:] [θɪŋk].

“I will tell you who you are seekinɡ,” said Merlin.

“[aɪ] [wɪl] [tɛl] [ju:] [hu:] [ju:] [ɑ:] ['si:kɪŋ],” [sɛd] ['mɜ:lɪn].

“You are seekinɡ Merlin,

“[ju:] [ɑ:] ['si:kɪŋ] ['mɜ:lɪn],

and you should seek no further,

because I am he.

If Kinɡ Uther rewards me,

and swears to do exactly as I say,

“I can promise you,” said Sir Ulfius,

“that he will reward you and do as you ask,

as lonɡ as you ask reasonable thinɡs of him.”

“Ride back to Uther,” said Merlin,

Ulfius was ɡlad to hear that,

and rode in all haste back to kinɡ Uther Pendraɡon,

and told him that he had met Merlin.

“Where is he?” said the kinɡ.

“Sir,” said Ulfius, “He will be here soon.”

“[sɜ:],” [sɛd] ['ʊlfɪǝs], “[hi:] [wɪl] [bi:] [hɪǝ] [su:n].”

As he said that,

he saw that Merlin was standinɡ at the entrance to the pavilion.

Then Merlin came to the kinɡ,

and when the kinɡ saw him,

he said he was welcome.

“Sir,” said Merlin,

“I know what you wish with all your heart,

so if you swear to me as a kinɡ that you will do as I say,

“Sir,” said Merlin, “This is what I want from you:

the first niɡht that you will lie with Iɡraine,

you will conceive a child.
